Notably, the entry-level MacBook Neo, which launched in March to compete in the budget-conscious laptop segment, saw its starting price climb from $599 to $699. The underlying cause of these price hikes is a severe supply-demand imbalance in the memory sector, often referred to by industry analysts as RAMageddon. According to data from the industry tracker TrendForce, the cost of dynamic random access memory surged by 98% during the first quarter of 2026. Projections indicate an additional price increase of 58% to 63% for the current quarter, driven by the aggressive expansion of AI data centers.
Memory manufacturers, including Micron, have shifted production capacity to prioritize high-bandwidth memory and other components essential for AI chipmakers like Nvidia. Micron confirmed on Wednesday that it has secured $22 billion in long-term supply commitments from customers focused on AI infrastructure. This reallocation of manufacturing resources has left a diminished supply for traditional consumer electronics, forcing manufacturers to compete for remaining inventory at significantly higher price points.
The technical shift involves a transition where silicon wafer capacity is increasingly diverted toward the production of high-density DRAM and HBM modules required for GPU-accelerated computing. Because these specialized memory chips require more complex manufacturing processes and longer lead times, the total available output for standard consumer-grade LPDDR memory has plummeted. This structural bottleneck prevents memory vendors from scaling up production quickly enough to meet the simultaneous demands of the AI sector and the consumer hardware market.
Apple CEO Tim Cook signaled this shift during an April conference call with analysts, noting that while existing inventories had previously bolstered gross margins, the company expected memory costs to exert an increasing impact on profitability by the end of June. The company stated in a recent release that it had reached a threshold where shielding customers from these component price surges was no longer sustainable. Despite the price hikes, the company’s primary revenue driver, the iPhone, remains unaffected by the current adjustments.
